Ricoh

A leading figure within the industry, Ricoh Company Ltd practises innovative design, having accumulated experience within the imaging and electronics sphere since 1936. It was founded and supported by the commercial division of the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, a now-defunct scientific institution founded in 1917 in Japan. The current CEO and President is Yoshirnori Yamashita, a PhD graduate from Kyoto University, who has assisted with building the company since 2010 under different roles. Ricoh’s headquarters continue to operate from Ota, Tokyo and they aim to produce outstanding electronic products, including a division dedicated to office equipment such as printers and photocopiers.

In 1955 Ricoh invented their first diaza copier, naming the device Ricopy 101. This model received certification of Mechanical Engineering Heritage by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineering Heritage, marking the beginnings of their journey to create cutting-edge photocopier technology. More recently, their ventures include creating head offices globally in the Netherlands and London, partnering with Siemens and Cisco Systems and acquiring the European operations of Danka for $210 millions. Furthermore, the company values discussions surrounding the environment and signed the Japan Climate Action Summit declaration in 2018. The precedence of this company is undeniable, as exemplified by these achievements.

Ricoh released its first compact and affordable digital office copier in 1987 and have since been creating more efficient workflows, supporting offices worldwide. Ricoh photocopiers can be organised into the following categories and we have given an example for each:

  • The IM Series (Intelligent Multifunction) are designed for busy, working environments. The company describes these photocopiers as working with scalable intelligence, security, sustainability and simplicity.
  • They can of course print in both colour and black and white and range from £1000-£4500.
  • The price of the model depends on the size, prints per minute and multifunction capabilities. They could include for example: touch screens, bluetooth and advanced finishing settings. A notable advanced finishing setting is the ‘finger-friendly’ setting, which crimps the paper’s sides to reduce the risk of paper cuts.

  • The MP Series is another set of models, ideal for busy, working environments. They can efficiently scan, copy and fax.
  • These printers are more expensive than the IM and SP Series, ranging from £1200-9000, with higher printing speeds and capacities (4700 sheets).
  • There are various eco-friendly features too, such as low-power sleep mode and a stapleless printing option. A notable feature on the MP 9003SP is the Human Detection Sensor, whereby the print switches on when it senses a person approaching.

  • The SP Series is the most reasonably priced, ranging from £300-500, offering reliable options for small businesses or households. They print A4, fax, scan and copy, but at a slower speed than other models.
  • The printers can operate wirelessly and from a 4.3” touchscreen.
